The Lyons Tower is located on a one-acre lot in downtown Mesa Arizona and is the vision of the late Kent Lyons. Taking its formal inspiration from the landscape of Monument Valley, the tower is divided between various levels of public and private space. On the ground level the building folds inward to produce a public community “valley” theater. This space acts as an anchor for community-based programming throughout the year. Programming such as concerts, farmers market and flea markets will activate the space allowing the public the opportunity to reclaim a piece of downtown Mesa. In addition to the theater space, the public are invited upwards to an elevated public terrace “mesa” hosting boutique retail, restaurants, cafes and garden spaces. The public terrace also acts as the entry point for fifty artists in residency studios. These studios host creatives in the fields ranging from film, photography, crafts, fashion and fine art. The remaining upper residential levels of the tower are private apartments hosting amenities such as a gym, pool, cafes, workspaces, communal lounges and a communal roof terrace with 360-degree views of surrounding Mesa, Tempe and Phoenix. This project is dedicated to Kent, his daughter Olive and his family.
