Black Carbon

Black Carbon is a 1500 sqft home perched in the Catskill mountains of East Branch New York. The project called for a minimalist home which utilized the steep slope of the site. The house is constructed out of a concrete and steel foundation which extends into framing system of the building. The house is then clad in blackened Shou-sugi-ban wood. Programmatically the house is divided into two zones of public and private use. The ground level and deck contain the living, kitchen and dining spaces while the second level hosts two small bedrooms and bath. Black Carbon is an expression of our design ethic of reduction and minimal existence. In an effort to return to nature we offer this work of architecture as a bridge which can connect us back to our inherent natural humanity.
